Authentic Italian Tomato Sauce Categories: low fat, sauces 1 can crushed Italian tomatoes - (24 oz) 1 small can tomato paste 1 small onion; finely chopped 2 garlic cloves; peeled, minced 1 pound ground sirloin - (to 1 1/2 lbs) 2 teaspoon sugar Salt; to taste Freshly-ground black pepper; to taste 2 teaspoon dried basil 1 bay leaf 1 teaspoon celery salt 1 cube beef bouillon 1 tablespoon margarine 1 tablespoon olive oil Brown the onion and garlic in the olive oil and margarine, then add the ground sirloin. Mix well while browning, separating the meat with a fork. Do this until the meat is well-browned, then add tomatoes and tomato paste. Over low heat, add salt and pepper to taste, basil, sugar, beef bouillon cube, celery salt and bay leaf. Cook over low heat for about one hour. Stir occasionally to avoid sticking. Remove bay leaf before serving. This recipe yields sauce for 6 servings. Comments: Reduced-sodium tomatoes, paste and bouillon can be used to lower the amount of sodium.
